The Caldwell Optimist Club teamed up with the Boise Noon Optimist Club to host the annual HOBY (Hugh O'Bryan Youth Leadership) Luncheon.

The group of young leaders is shown above. During their week-long leadership camp, the students honed their leadership skills and performed community service activities.

Some of our participants are shown here. Thanks to all who participated. The HOBY kids are outstanding! And so are you.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS:

I need to make a correction to the last bulletin :  John and Jennifer Bullis from J.B. Roofing were our honored guests.  They have gave the use of their building to Pals Boxing until they sold just recently.

Sorry for the mistake.

George Coombs with the Caldwell Night Rodeo spoke at the dinner Meeting that was held at the TNT Dynamite Café. He talked about some additions this year at the Rodeo. The Caldwell night Rodeo will be holding is 1^st Annual Chicks n Chaps Rodeo Clinic.  The girls will meet PRCA Cowboys and Cowgirls , learn about roping and riding in the rodeo arena,  The proceeds will be go to the Power of Pink to support Breast Cancer Awareness. SOCCER NEWS

Soccer season starts in March.  Optimist will be needing volunteers to help in the concession stand on Saturdays.  Please think about when you would be able to help.

The soccer board is looking for a volunteer to help with the organizing and with the distribution of uniforms prior the starting the games.  This would take approximately 2 weeks per year.

Also they are asking for help in contacting sponsors that have sponsored in previous years.  They have list and would like some volunteers to contact 2 or 3 sponsor from this list. 

If you want to help with the sponsors or are willing to help with uniforms, please contact Bob Kafka.

BOXING

The General Membership voted to add the amendment to the bylaws on February 20^th.  The proposed bylaw change is to a new sub-section 7.4.2 to Article VII, section 4 as follows, 7.4.2 Caldwell Optimist Youth Boxing: “Caldwell Optimist Youth Boxing” is a standing committee of this Corporation and is duly formed and existing and governed under these Bylaws and under Bylaws of Caldwell Optimist Youth Boxing (COYB) attached hereto marked Exhibit 7.4.2 and by this reference incorporated herein these Bylaws.

This will give our Optimist Club two youth chapters – COSC and COYB.

Prez Mary had asked new member Elaine Leppert to coordinate speaker chairpersons. Elaine, bring the list to the next meeting so we can sign-up. Next mtg. Tues. eve., 6:30, Orchard House, Sunnyslope.

Quite an interesting district meeting in Hood River. The subject of club insurance came up due to the dropping of large numbers of youth football coaches from our district membership rolls due in turn to the inadaquacies of OI insurance. Mike Kohout, past prez McCall and insurance guru, and Rick Matkin, past prez of Caldwell and youth counselor guru, have been invited to host panel discussions at the next convention at Richland, WA on 5/18/13 regarding what the insurance covers/doesn't covers and a do's and dont's training syllabus regarding safely participating in activities with minors (i.e., how to keep pedophiles out and how to not be accused of being one). All adultophiles are incouraged to attend.

Prez Mary, I checked with the whachamacallit resturant on the hill (the old Perkins). The 1st Wed. noon of ea. month is already reserved by the Chamber. All other Wed. noon's are available.

For all you with October birthdays, Happy Birhtday. Ruby suffocated all in attendance with a sumptuous ice cream cake. Just Delicious. Thanks Ruby. The key words here being "in attendance" and "Thanks Ruby."

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS:

The speaker for the March 21, 2012 was Marsha Davis. Marsha is with Habitat for Humanity. The Canyon County Habitat for Humanity(CCHFH) affiliate began in 1995. Since then, 14 families have moved into Habitat Homes in Caldwell and Nampa. You need to qualify for these interest free loans by meeting certain guidelines. Once you have qualified you are expected to work 500 hours on this home or volunteering in the ReStore. It usually takes about 1½ years to qualify once you have submitted an application for the home. To qualify you must have a job or a source of income.
Ways to volunteer for Homes for Humanity is:
Join one of the committees, such as Construction, Site Selection, Family Selection & Partnership, Public Relations, Fundraising, Church Relations, and or our newest committee, the ReStore. Committees meet one monthly and are the nuts and bolts of Habitats daily work.
Build Homes or help on A Brush with Kindness project.
Habitat works on current projects during the spring, summer and fall. Helping to build a Habitat House or working on a home repair project.
Volunteer at the ReStore or in the Habitat Office. Volunteers will pick up donations, help in the warehouse, cashier or assist shoppers in the store. The office needs volunteers to answer phone, work on the computer, create brochures, work with current home owners among the many jobs to be done.

Habitat would also accept you monetary donation.

Soccer News
Optimist Club is again volunteering to help with the Soccer Spring Program. Be thinking about what Saturday you would like to work.

The Soccer Jamboree will be held on May 3rd, 2012 at Brothers Park. We were asked to make a second obstacle course because it is so well liked that it gets bottlenecked there. Bob Kafka, Larry Blackburn, Chris Allgood and Joe Shreve are going to meet and try to think of something a little different for the second obstacle course. We will need volunteers to staff the Jamboree on the 3rd of May, so put the date on your calendar.

We are looking into the shared lunch fund raiser to be held at the Fiesta Guadalajara toward the last of May.

The Dinner meeting this month is March 27th at the Orchard House. The Orchard House is located on Hwy 55 almost to Marsing.

The Optimist Club is going to order new shirts. They will be button down either Long or short sleeve. The color is Royal Blue with Gold for the Optimist logo. These shirts will need to be paid for prior to my ordering them. The shirts come in both women and men sizes. Each Shirt will cost $21.00 for sizes small through X-Large, $23.00 for XX-Large, $24.00 for XXX-Large. This cost will include the embroidered Optimist Logo. Your name can be embroidered for an added cost. I will be passing a sign up sheet around t the next few meetings. If you are interested please sing the sheet. I will be collecting the money prior to ordering the shirts. There are pictures of the shirts below. You can choose either long sleeve or short sleeve.

The speaker for the February 15, 2012 was Craig Cheney from Sage Wealth Management, LLC. Craig talked about how Employers should train their employees on how to handle the 401K plans efficiently. You also need to talk to a financial advisor to talk about your risk management of your retirement funds.

The speaker for February 22, 2012 was Loni Trude who is also known as the Lollipop Balloon Artist. She makes balloon characters and then photographs the children holding her creations. She is also publishing picture books with some of these children in them. These books are called The Crown Jewels of Caldwell, Dreaming Big. Her goal is to publish 10 books, she has 4 done is now working on the 5th. Loni sells these books for $20.00 each.

Regional District Meeting

The Regional District Meeting was held February 11, 2012 at Twin Falls, Idaho. We had 7 members who attended from the Caldwell Club. They were Connie Holt, Anita Whelchel, Debbie Lenington, Jim Toto, Florence Blackburn, Larry Blackburn and Diane Crookham. Guest Lunch speaker was Ian Johnson, a former BSU football player. He talked about how he came about to become a BSU football player and the thoughts going through his head at the time of the winning play at the Fiesta Bowl. It was fun to listen to.
It was also interesting to hear what the other clubs were doing for the kids in their community.

The Pal Boxing was held on February 18, 2012. It was pretty well attended. Thanks to all who helped out. There was good feedback from the teams that traveled to attend this event. Dolores sold over $1000.00 worth of 50/50 tickets. Joe collected information from the out of town coaches to find out the number of nights and where they were staying in Caldwell. This should be a guideline of future economic impact this event would have for Caldwell.

The Idaho Silver Belt Invitational coming to the Caldwell Events Center on February 18th.

The Idaho Silver Belt Invitational amateur boxing sponsored by the Caldwell Police Department in conjunction with the Caldwell Optimist Club will be held Saturday, February 18 at the O’Connor Fieldhouse in the Caldwell Events Center starting at 6 pm.


There will be 20 exciting bouts of amateur boxing; tickets will be available at the door. Children under 6 are FREE; youth 6-12, $5; Adults $10 and Floor Seating $15. Proceeds go to Caldwell Police Athletic League (PAL) and Caldwell Optimist Club.

Due to popular demand from competitors, Matinee Bonus Bouts will be held starting at 1 pm and all tickets for this special afternoon session will be only $5.

The doors will open one hour before the competition starts for the afternoon and evening session.

Program highlights:
Our Speaker was Kieran Donahue. He is running for Canyon County Sheriff. Kieran is a Detective for The Canyon County Sheriffs office and has worked for the County for 8 years. Kieran talked about the Gang and Violent Crime Unit that includes several local Police Departments. This unit is in conjunction with the Federal ATF Department. This allows the arrested to be tried in the Federal Prison System. They are targeting the Head people in the Meth Trafficking System. The Treasure Valley is a distribution point for the drug coming from Mexico.

A P.A.L Boxing meeting was held on January 23rd. We will be needing 52 volunteers for the Silverbelt boxing event on February 18, 2012. There will be a sign up sheet at the meeting next week.
We already have 7 members of the JOOI Club signed up to help out at the event.
The next Boxing meeting will be held January 31st at 7:00 A.M. at Mr. V’s
We still are looking for sponsors for the Silverbelt Boxing. These sponsorships need to be turned in by the end of January to get printed on the flyers.

Our Speaker today was Gail Pirnie who works for Health and Welfare in Adult Mental Services. She talked about the services that are available to adults with mental Health issues. She stated that most of the cases are from the indigent population.

Some of the services available are:
· formed groups
· vocational rehabilitation,
· Case management helping access different services in the community.

We hosted US Senator Mike Crapo Monday at the Golden Dragon today.  

Another great meeting; Casey Crookham emceed the meeting for us in the absence of Anita and State Senator John McGee introduced Sen Crapo. Sen Crapo is impressed with our creed! 

Not mentioned at the meeting, but so important to all us: Gov Linda Jackson, who did attend Monday's meeting, said our Pacific Northwest District came in third of all districts in OI for membership. She also said it was Idaho that put us "over the top." Great job Linda and everyone else.

Past Saturday, June 12, at the Caldwell YMCA, we helped serve lunch to the HOBY students. Thanks to Veep2 CONNIE ENSIGN who headed up our participation along with BRENDA WHELCHEL, MARY ARMSTRONG, ELIZABETH ANZALDUA, FRED “the Plumber” ANZALDUA, the WAYNER and JOE “Mama” SHREVE.

Past Friday morning, June 18, in O’Connor field house, we served breakfast to the Idaho Youth Games (IYG) participants. Program highlights

ANDY McCLUSKEY spoke to us about a new venture he started with former member Whit Jones. In trying to make a small dent in Isreali-Palestinian relations, they have started a company called Two Neighbors to make hand embroidered clothe coffee cup sleeves. Poor Israeli women sew them then poor Palestinian women embroider them. He calls it a social business more so than a wholly economic one. He brought some samples and showed slides of his recent trip to Israel and the West Bank. ANDY says most folks there just want to get along and support their families and would do so if not for the ultra-religious radicals and zealots.

A Final Note

Past Prez ROB COLLINS is now a senior at NNU. My how time flies. Seems like just yesterday he graduated from kindergarten, right JANE.
